Prevent Warping with Proper Door Storage

Prevent Warping with Proper Door Storage

No one wants warped doors in their house, especially in new builds!  Make sure you understand what causes doors to warp and shrinkage.  When you know these factors, you can avoid them and create proper storage for your doors.  If you still end up with a warped door—don’t worry it can happen to the best of us—we have an instructional video on how to smooth out that warp.

Why Do Doors Warp?

It can be puzzling how our seemingly perfect rectangular doors end up warped, but the answer is actually simple.  All doors, including our mighty Deanta Doors, are susceptible to the elements.  When heat or moisture gets into the fibres of your door, it causes wood to expand and contract.  Different timbers are affected by the elements to varying degrees.  Other factors that can play into warping are the location or height of a door.  External doors go through more extremes and can be especially noticeable in Spring and Summer when the wood begins to dry out after months of being wet.  Tall doors are prone to twisting and must be treated carefully to counter act this.

The environment in which doors are installed can also cause them to warp too.  Building sites can be unpredictable, especially in Ireland.  If a furnace is running, the moisture in the air is affected and, consequently, the moisture balance of your door will be affected.  The opposite can happen if the environment is overly moist; doors installed in these conditions can warp or shrink after they’ve been hung.

Storage Solutions to Prevent Warping

Warp prevention begins at the storage level.  Your Deanta Doors need to be stored in cool, dry areas and AWAY from radiators, sunlight, and any possible source of water.  Good ventilation is key for your door storage to be prepared for any change in the elements.  Once you have your ideal area for storing doors, make sure you keep them stored horizontally, and on a flat surface.  Having several doors laying on top of each other is also beneficial because their weight will hold their shape and prevent warping.

Avoid storing doors vertically.  What may save space in the short run, will cost your quality doors and time in the long run.  Storing doors vertically would require a way to firmly secure them, and keep them completely vertical at a 90 degree angle.  Even with being secured, the doors are still at risk of twisting and don’t have the benefits that come with the pressure of other doors stacked on top of each other.

Reverse the Effects of Warping

If you notice a door showing signs of warping, don’t panic because this can be straightened out—literally.  Watch the video below for step by step guide on smoothing warped doors.  The key is to catch it early; inspect your doors before instaliation and make sure they are going on in perfect condition, in a proper environment.
